The drama surrounding the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship is far from over.A London judge has ruled that a trial can proceed over accusations made by former Brazilian driver Felipe Massa concerning the infamous “Crashgate” scandal.
Judge Jay of the High Court in London has steadfast that Massa is entitled to attempt to prove, through a trial, that he was the victim of a conspiracy. Though, the judge also indicated that such a trial is unlikely to overturn the championship title awarded to British driver Lewis Hamilton that year.
Lewis Hamilton’s 2008 Title Remains Intact
The 2008 season, which saw hamilton clinch his first of seven world titles, was decided by a razor-thin margin of just one point. Massa believes he was unfairly deprived of the championship during the Singapore Grand Prix, the 15th race of the 18-race season. The race was won by Spaniard Fernando Alonso driving for Renault.
Massa alleges that to secure Alonso’s victory, Renault instructed its driver, Nelson Piquet Jr., to deliberately crash his car into a wall along the track. At the time of the incident, Alonso had just pitted. The subsequent deployment of the safety car allowed him to gain a meaningful advantage, leapfrogging drivers who had already pitted and ultimately winning the race.
Massa, simultaneously occurring, suffered a disastrous pit stop and finished outside the points. Hamilton secured a crucial third-place finish, accumulating vital points in the championship battle.
Judge Jay emphasized that,according to the regulations of the International Automobile Federation (FIA),championship results cannot be altered retrospectively.
Despite this, the judge ruled that Massa can pursue a trial to seek damages amounting to £64 million (approximately €72.5 million). The lawsuit names the FIA, Formula One Management (FOM), and former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone as defendants.Massa aims to prove that these parties failed to adequately investigate Piquet Jr.’s crash in 2008,despite being aware of the race manipulation.
This ample sum is reportedly calculated based on the potential earnings from salaries and commercial contracts Massa would have received had he been crowned world champion.
