Nothing and no one is currently stopping the BG 74 Veilchen Ladies Göttingen on their way to the title in the second basketball Bundesliga. The previously unbeaten Wings from Leverkusen felt the sensational strength in the 86:73 (46:44) victory of coach Ruzica Djankic’s team.
It was a game of runs in front of 480 enthusiastic spectators in the FKG hall. While the hosts were leading 19:9 after six minutes, an 18:0 run by the guests suddenly gave the Wings a 27:19 lead at the end of the first quarter. The reason for this was undoubtedly that Dzankic did without Ana Faustino, who had taken a seat on the bench, during this phase. “But I also have trust in all the players,” said the BG 74 coach, explaining this measure. But when the Portuguese came back, a 17:0 run by the Violets in the middle of the second quarter led to a 36:27 lead, which they didn’t relinquish until the end.
Although things got tight again at half-time at 46:44, the Göttingen women finally laid the foundation for their eventual victory with a 10-0 run in the third quarter from 57:53 to 67:53. Katherine Peneueta particularly stood out, hitting three three-point throws in this sequence. Leverkusen seemed more and more helpless to find any passing points given the aggressiveness of the BG 74.
So the last quarter was an exhibition for the hosts, which the spectators rightly acknowledged with frenetic cheers.
