Anyang’s professional basketball team has completely changed under coach Yoo Do-hoon’s regime.
With 7 wins and 2 losses at the beginning of the season, they are in the sole lead with 4 consecutive wins. The average number of points conceded per game is 68.0, the lowest in the league. The defensive index, which ranked 5th last year with 78.1 points, quickly transformed into the top level in the league.
The team’s upward trend is the result of ‘defense-centered basketball’ emphasized by coach Yoo Do-hoon. The defensive balance between inside and outside, and between domestic and foreign players, is stable. Not only the starting players but also the sixth man clearly performed their respective roles, creating a solid organizational structure.
Cheong Kwan-Jang’s defense came from a change in the perception of the entire team rather than specific tactics. Coach Yoo explained, “All players share the principle that ‘defense is something we do together,’ and the player blocking the shooter and the big man defending the screener work together. In this process, collaboration is emphasized rather than individual ability.”
At the center of the team are ‘veterans’ Kim Young-hyun (guard) and Kim Jong-gyu (center). Kim Young-hyun is the core of the perimeter defense, blocking the opposing guard and taking charge of the first line of blocking.
Kim Jong-gyu serves as a support under the goal with his height and experience. Even though he is returning from injury, his presence is clear. The leadership of the two players was passed on to younger players, and the defensive balance became more solid.
