Zwolle, Netherlands – October 21, 2023 – The ZBC Peperbus Badminton tournament served up a full day of electrifying rallies and fierce competition this past Saturday, drawing 109 dedicated players from across the Netherlands to the Zwolle ZBC hall. from the crack of dawn, the air was thick with the sound of shuttles being smashed and the cheers of enthusiastic spectators, marking a successful return for this popular event.
The tournament, which featured play across categories 2, 5, and 8, showcased a wide spectrum of talent, from seasoned first-division players to emerging stars in the seventh division. The organizing committee, comprised of Oleg Gouriev, Inge Pluim, Vera van Dijk, and Michel ten Voorde, expressed their satisfaction with the day’s proceedings.
“We’re thrilled to have brought this event back for its second iteration,” stated Ten Voorde.”After a hiatus in 2024 due to organizational hurdles, we’re committed to making the Peperbus Tournament an annual fixture on the badminton calendar.”
A Day of close Matches and Inspiring Performances
With fourteen local players from ZBC’s own ranks competing, the tournament ran with impressive efficiency. “While there are always minor adjustments to be made, like managing player wait times or dealing with the occasional unfortunate injury – which are beyond our control as organizers – the overall experience was overwhelmingly positive,” Ten Voorde added.
The Peperbus Tournament, easily identifiable by its distinctive shuttlecock logo shaped like the iconic De peperbus tower, also witnessed some truly remarkable performances.In the highest men’s category, Nils Strömö, hailing from The Hague, delivered a dominant display in the final. He secured a convincing victory over Dennis van Bekkum with a score of 21-11 and 21-14.
Ten voorde highlighted Strömö’s dedication, noting, “it was a well-deserved win, especially considering he had to catch a train at 5:15 AM due to track work to make it to Zwolle on time.”
ZBC: A Hub for Badminton Excellence
Michel ten Voorde, an Apeldoorn resident and a member of ZBC for several years, finds the club’s blend of social camaraderie and competitive spirit especially appealing. “Even though I’m not currently playing in any competitions myself, the combination of fun and performance-oriented play is what keeps me engaged,”
he shared.
ZBC boasts six senior teams, with their top two squads competing in the third and fourth divisions.“We’re proud to be not only the oldest and highest-ranking badminton club in Zwolle but also to have a robust youth program,”
Ten Voorde emphasized. With a membership of approximately two hundred, ZBC is looking towards a shining future.
