NFL Goes Global: Munich Lands First-Ever Regular Season Game in Germany!
Get ready, football fanatics! The National football League is taking its show on the road, and this time, it’s heading to Germany. In a landmark announcement, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell revealed that Munich’s iconic Allianz Arena, home to the legendary FC Bayern Munich, will host the league’s inaugural regular season game on German soil in 2022. While the exact date is still under wraps, the excitement is already palpable.
This historic game in Munich is part of a larger international push, with the NFL scheduling a total of five regular season games outside the U.S.in 2022. Beyond munich,London will welcome three more matchups, and Mexico City will also get in on the action.
Germany has long been identified as a prime market for NFL growth, and this move underscores that commitment. Commissioner Goodell highlighted a new agreement that will see both Munich and Frankfurt host a combined total of four regular season games over the next four years.
We are very pleased to welcome munich and Frankfurt to the NFL family,
Goodell stated. It is indeed our pleasure to reward the passion of our German fans by hosting regular NFL games.
He further expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming game, adding, We are excited to play our first game in Germany later this year at FC Bayern Munich’s fantastic stadium and explore the possibilities of a broader collaboration with the Bundesliga.
The selection process was competitive, with Munich and Frankfurt emerging victorious over nine other German cities vying for the opportunity. While Düsseldorf made it to the final three,it wasn’t chosen this time around, though Brett Gosper, head of NFL Europe, hinted at future possibilities for the city.
We look forward to the partnerships with Munich and Frankfurt, which will extend beyond the Games and help us accelerate our growth in Germany,
Gosper commented.
This expansion into Germany is more than just a game; it’s a strategic move to tap into a passionate and growing fanbase, much like how the NFL has cultivated interest in markets like the UK and Mexico. For German fans, this is the culmination of years of anticipation, offering them a chance to experience the thrill of live NFL action firsthand. It’s a testament to the league’s global vision and its dedication to bringing the sport to every corner of the world.
