Alcañiz is leveling up its sports game! The Municipal Sports Center is undergoing a major change, wiht a brand-new 25-meter semi-Olympic heated pool and two state-of-the-art tennis courts on the horizon. These upgrades are set to inject fresh energy into the cityS sports offerings and bolster the municipal Sports Service.

Eduardo Orrios, the councilor overseeing the area, shared that the pool project is a important 77% complete. Things are right on track, and we’re looking at a potential grand opening in the first half of 2026. This isn’t just any pool; it’s a 25-meter, six-lane beauty equipped with cutting-edge climate control and energy-efficient systems. It’s all part of a larger vision to consolidate aquatic and racket sports into one dynamic venue.

Racket Sports Revolution

Simultaneously occurring, the buzz is building around the two new tennis courts. Construction kicked off in September, and they’re slated for completion by year’s end. After the initial earthworks, the focus is now on the electrical installation and lighting. This means Alcañiz will soon be ready for nighttime play and local tournaments, adding a serious boost to its racket sports scene.

Once these courts are ready, the city plans to transform the space between the pool and the courts. Imagine a new sports hub designed for the surging popularity of paddle tennis and pickleball – that exciting hybrid of paddle tennis, tennis, and badminton. With demand, especially from younger athletes, skyrocketing, these additions couldn’t come at a better time.

“The progress is fantastic, and in just a few months, these facilities will be a major draw for the Municipal Sports Service,” Orrios stated during a recent technical visit with Carlos Herráez, the director of the Municipal Sports Service. “Our goal is to make Alcañiz a destination with modern, accessible facilities that cater to the latest sports trends.”

Back in the Water: The 16-Meter Pool Reopens

In other exciting news, the 16-meter heated pool is back in action! It reopened on October 1st after essential maintenance, and the community has responded with enthusiasm, welcoming over 260 users in its first week. Local powerhouses like the Swimming Club and the Triathlon Club have already resumed their training schedules, and all planned municipal activities are a go.

The fall season is off to a strong start, with 349 students signed up for municipal classes. These participants are spread across 32 children’s groups, 10 adult aquatic activities, and 5 therapeutic swimming sessions. The councilor emphasized that the reopening of the 16-meter pool is crucial, ensuring that aquatic activities and citizen therapies can continue seamlessly while the new, larger facility takes shape.

Looking Ahead: The Future Covered Pavilion

Beyond the immediate upgrades, Alcañiz is thinking big with plans for a future covered sports pavilion. This ambitious project is slated for the well-known red court area within the Santa maría Sports City, strategically located between the hockey rink and the Local Police offices. This isn’t just about adding another building; it’s about creating a versatile sports and events hub.

The envisioned pavilion will be a multi-purpose powerhouse, perfect for a range of indoor sports like basketball, indoor soccer, handball, and volleyball. But its utility doesn’t stop there; it’s also designed to host large-scale events and community gatherings. The blueprints include seating for approximately 500 spectators, with the flexibility to transform into a venue capable of hosting concerts or fairs with a capacity of up to 2,300 people. This forward-thinking approach ensures Alcañiz remains at the forefront of sports infrastructure advancement.
