Bartomeu Battles Four Legal Battles: Ex-Barca Chief Claims No Personal Gain, Questions “Unfair Management” Charges
Barcelona, Spain – Former FC barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is finding himself in teh crosshairs of the Spanish legal system, facing a quartet of judicial proceedings stemming from his tenure at the helm of the iconic football club. In a strongly worded statement released through his lawyer, Bartomeu asserts his innocence, claiming he cannot comprehend being subjected to these legal challenges when there’s “not the slightest indication of having obtained any personal heritage benefit.”
Bartomeu, who led Barcelona from 2014 to 2020, has consistently maintained his willingness to cooperate and clarify his actions during his presidency. His legal team highlights his participation in several high-profile cases, including the “Neymar 2” case, where he was acquitted. He was also released immediately after his arrest in connection with the “Barçagate” scandal in March 2021, and he provided a statement in the “Negreira” case, which commenced in March 2023.
The latest legal storm centers on an alleged crime of unfair administration. This new proceeding, made public this past Monday, involves Bartomeu being summoned to testify as an investigated party on October 4th.The Public Prosecutor’s Office accuses him of diverting millions in commissions through intermediaries,bypassing the club,in the signing of footballer Malcom. This charge also encompasses the criminal case related to Neymar’s transfer and the ambitious Espai Barça renovation project.
This latest complaint, which implicates Bartomeu and othre former board members, stems from a forensic report commissioned by the current Barça board, led by Joan Laporta. The report, submitted to the Public Ministry in 2022, detailed alleged accounting irregularities concerning player sales, which the club initially estimated at a staggering €30 million. However, the prosecution is now focusing on three specific operations they deem suspicious, reducing the scope of their investigation.
Bartomeu’s legal portrayal, spearheaded by Josep Maria Fuster-Fabra, expressed surprise at the timing of the latest proceedings, noting that they became aware of the complaint through media reports. Fuster-Fabra emphasized Bartomeu’s proactive stance, stating that on February 2, 2022, a written submission was made to the prosecution expressing his readiness to clarify any issues. He further added that on December 21, 2023, Bartomeu was also made aware through the media of proceedings opened in an instructional court, where he immediately offered to provide a statement.
“My client has been seen in the need to clarify his situation given the serious personal damage he is suffering,”
Fuster-Fabra stated, underscoring the personal toll these legal battles are taking on the former Barcelona chief.
