McGill Basketball: Lefebvre Signs Pro Deal in Portugal

MONTREAL – Former McGill Redbirds power forward Georges Lefebvre is headed overseas to begin his professional basketball career after signing a contract with Galitos Aveiro of Portugal’s Proliga. He is the 20th McGillian to go onto a playing career in pro hoops.

The 23-year-old Montreal native, who measures 6-foot-8 and 214 pounds, played his final season of university eligibility with McGill in 2024-25. In 28 games overall, he averaged an team-leading 12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds while logging 30.7 minutes per outing. Lefebvre was a second-team all-star in the RSEQ conference last season, collecting team MVP honours. In regular season play, he finished ninth among Quebec league scoring leaders (11.5 ppg) and was fifth in rebounding (7.0 rpg) over 16 contests.

Before transferring to McGill, Lefebvre spent two seasons at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. (2022-24), and two years with the University of Vermont (2020-22). Prior to beginning his university career, he was a standout at Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington, N.C.

Founded in 1904, Galitos Aveiro is one of Portugal’s oldest basketball clubs. The team’s creation came three years after McGill formed its first varsity basketball squad in 1901.

In 28 games in total, he posted an average of 12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds, the best in his team, while recording 30.7 minutes per game. Lefebvre was appointed to the second star team of the CSRSQ conference last season, winning the title of the most useful player of his team. During the regular season, he finished ninth among the best markers in the Quebec League (11.5 points per game) and fifth in the chapter of rebounds (7.0 per match) in 16 games.

Before joining McGill, Lefebvre spent two seasons at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia (2022-2024), and two years at the University of Vermont (2020-2022). Before starting his university career, he distinguished himself at Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington, in North Carolina.

Founded in 1904, Galitos Aveiro is one of the oldest basketball clubs in Portugal. The creation of the team intervened three years after the training of the first McGill basketball university team in 1901.
