Carlos Alcaraz won the US Open for the second time after 2022 and is again number one on the tennis world rankings. The Spaniard won the final in New York against the Italian defending champion Jannik Sinner 6: 2, 3: 6, 6: 1, 6: 4.
The 22-year-old ended a strong tournament in which he only had to accept a set of set against Sinner, and celebrated his sixth Grand Slam title. On Monday he replaces Sinner (24) on the top position and leads the world rankings again in two years. Sinner had taken over the first place in early June 2024.
Trump visit delays the third final duel of the duo in a row
Alcaraz and Sinner were facing a Grand Slam final for the third time in a row, which had not existed in the professional era since 1968. At the French Open, Alcaraz had won the final, Sinner had triumphed in Wimbledon.
US President Donald Trump had personally looked at the final in the stadium, which is why the security measures had to be tightened. The beginning of the final had therefore been delayed by half an hour. Thousands of places were still free at the start of the duel, as long snakes had formed in front of the entrance. Only in the second set was Arthur Ashe stage, which was almost 24,000 spectators, completely filled.
Germany’s best tennis professional Alexander Zverev was eliminated in the third round of the Grand Slam tournament, and he had lost to Sinner at the end of the season in the final of the Australian Open.
