Slovenia: Adult Movement Initiative – Discover How!

The Slovenian Olympic Committee has recently announced the selection of 151 suppliers of sporting and recreational activities guided to participate in the “Move to exercise” project during the 2025/26 season. This project provides for the realization of free exercise programs throughout the national territory.

The project aims to stimulate the physically inactive adult population by offering a wide range of exercises and activities. These include functional exercises, dance, Nordic walk, yoga, rowing, running, swimming, badminton, cycling, martial arts, football, handball, basketball, water polo and other sports.

“This season, the offer of training programs will be extremely varied. We plan to implement 466 sports and recreational training programs for the duration of the project, which will end in 2028, involving in total about 10,000 people,” said Dr. Uroš Mohorič, secretary general of the Slovenian Olympic Committee – Association of Sports Federations, while presenting the project.

All participants will undergo physical fitness at the beginning and end of the program, to monitor their progress. “I believe that in this way we will be able to inspire many people to practice physical activity,” added Mohorič.

The initiative is aimed at adults who do not respect the guidelines of the World Health Organization for physical activity, which recommend at least 150-300 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity, or 75-150 minutes of high intensity physical activity per week, or an adequate combination of both, as well as muscle reinforcement exercises at least twice a week, involving all the main muscle groups.

The project provides for the creation of a network of suppliers of sports programs, recreational and quotes managed professionally to promote health and activate adults locally. After a public tender, the suppliers were selected on the basis of the quality of the programs proposed, the professionalism of the staff, the accessibility and diversity of the offer.

The first contracts with the selected suppliers were signed this week, with programs that will be activated throughout the country starting from October. The training will be 60 hours per year, which means two weekly sessions of one hour each.

The “Moving to practice” project is co -financed by the European Union through the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) and the Republic of Slovenia, the Ministry of Economy, Tourism and Sport; The total value of the project exceeds 4.4 million euros. Dejan Židan, secretary of state at the Ministry of Sport and Physical Education, underlined that “offering free workouts in all regions of Slovenia, we are opening the doors to adults who do not take enough exercise to take a step towards a healthier and more active life. This represents an investment in people and in the future of our health.”

He also highlighted the importance of the collaboration between the sports and health sector, and has emphasized that the project will contribute to achieving the objectives of the National Sports program.
