Servus Christoph, the new NFL season begins next week. A lot has happened in the offseason. Which team are you particularly looking forward to?
As a sympathizer, of course, I see what the packers do. But I also find the Commanders exciting. Are they so good again? You have upgraded a bit. Or there is the Sophomore Slump at Jayden Daniels, which I don’t believe in. I’m looking forward to the Lions because I don’t assess them as strongly as the last two years. I found the patriots really boring for the past two or three years. They will be really good this season. It is probably not enough for the playoffs, but they will definitely be fun. Not so easy to choose a team. But that’s the cool thing about the NFL that every team actually has to tell a story.
In the DAZN podcast with your colleague Flo Hauser you said last week that you even find the browns exciting …
If you had told me that three weeks ago, I would have had to go to the knee. But yes, I took a closer look at her and there are really a few young, exciting players that I look forward to. I find the browns exciting. You can’t tell anyone that.
Who will be the surprise of the coming season?
I go with Carolina. They did good things in the offseason. The defensive will still not be good, but worse than last year is actually not possible. I don’t think they play for the playoffs, but I trust them to win eight victories.
And who disappointed?
My feeling tells me that the Steelers and Rodgers will not work. But it is an exciting experiment because it doesn’t really fit together what the offensive coordinator wants to play and what Rodgers stands for as a quarterback. It’s like fire and ice. This one year has a little bit of catastrophent tourism. But I like to let myself be surprised because his qualities are undisputed.
And again to the Lions: I think that they will be worse than last year. This does not mean that they miss the playoffs, for God’s sake. They will have a double -digit number of victory again, but they will no longer create the 15 victories from the previous season.
How do you see the NFC in total?
For me, the clear number one is the Eagles. I really have it in my own group. Behind it could be really tight. The entire NFC North can calculate something: the packers are good. I have the Vikings very high. The 14 victories from the pre -season will probably not, but if McCarthy works, it is the better team. As of today I would tap the Vikings in their division in first place. Then the BUCs are still on my bill and the RAMs are an extremely strong team. At the moment I would even rely on the 2 in the NFC when Stafford is fit.
All playoff teams from last season. Which teams can make it new to the playoffs this season that were not there last year?
The Bengals could come in in the AFC, even if the defense is really catastrophic. If Trey Hendrickson should still go and the defensive gets worse, which is actually difficult, I don’t see it in the playoffs.
The NFC is a bit more exciting because you can have the falcons on the screen, as well as the Niners and somehow the cowboys because they are the cowboys. Overall, however, I don’t think there will be more than two new playoff teams.
At the end of the playoffs, the Super Bowl is waiting. What is your tip for it?
I actually have a tip this season. Unsurprisingly, these are the Eagles against Baltimore. I just like the two best today. Baltimore is so well staffed in all positions. Lamar Jackson could have been MVP last year. We would have spoken a lot more about Derrick Henry if Saquon Barkley hadn’t been so outstanding. But even if I really treat it to Baltimore, I would find it difficult to type against the Eagles at the moment. They have become weaker, which is clear after such a title with such a strong roster. You can’t pay them all. But the squad is still so good. Stand now, this season will only be about the Eagles. In my view, everything else is still nonsense.
The Eagles were so strong last season because of their rookie cornerback duos Cooper Dejean and Quinyon Mitchell. Which rookies are you particularly looking forward to this season?
Actually, we always look at the quarterbacks. But Shedeur Sanders will probably not play, that would of course be an exciting story, and Cam Ward is the most unobtrusive number 1 pick ever. At least that I can remember. There is no talk about that. Nevertheless, it is of course interesting to see that. The most exciting personnel is Travis Hunter because he is just a unicorn and will play offense and defense what you hear. We have never seen that in the form. This will be extremely exciting whether this also works at NFL level. That makes Jacksonville sexy. And behind my Packers glasses, of course, I am interested in whether Matthew Gold can be number 1 wide receiver in the team. If he is, we’ll talk about another level at the Green Bay offense.
