At the age of just 17, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and then the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. His political journey progressed rapidly after being elected as a member of the State Executive Committee of the Jana Sangh in 1974.

  • In 1998 and 1999, he became a Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore.
  • In 2004, he became part of the Indian delegation in the United Nations General Assembly.
  • From 2004 to 2007, he took out a 19,000 km long Rath Yatra across the state as the president of BJP Tamil Nadu.
  • In 2016, he was made the chairman of the Care Board, where he played a role in record exports.
  • He was later in charge of BJP in Kerala, and then the Governor of Jharkhand and Maharashtra.
