A few days before the big departure, on July 5 in Lille, of the new edition of the Grande Boucle, which will still stop in Châteauroux on July 13, the mayor Castelroussin Gil Avérous decided to mark the occasion by paying a sympathetic tribute to the British cyclist also nicknamed the man of the island of Man.
He thus asked his services to place a new panel – renamed “Cavendish City” – below those present at the various entrances to the city. In total, 17 municipal panels were added.
“He has won three times here in Châteauroux, with the sprint of course. He is an extraordinary sportsman, that makes us happy, ”explains Gil Avérous on the media site here Berry, ex France Bleu. “It deserved a wink!” », Adds the councilor to his X account.
Retired since November 2024, Mark Cavendish is the holder of the record of steps victories on the Tour de France with 35 successes. In 2008, 2011 and 2021, the Briton dominated the sprints on the avenue de la Châtre.
If these signs are temporary, the city of Châteauroux plans, according to here Berry, to rename a part of the avenue de la Châtre, in front of the Gaston-Petit stadium, named Cavendish. “I told him about it, he is very enthusiastic. We are going to do it for sure, perhaps by the end of the year, according to his availability, ”says Gil Avérous.
