Hoops and Wheels: A Unique Basketball Experience

The centerpiece of the initiative was a series of basketball and wheelchair basketball experience events held at Okini Arena Maishima. The first event tipped off on Saturday, February 8th, 2025, following a game against the Koshigaya Alphas, with a follow-up on Saturday, March 1st, 2025. The March 1st event saw the participation of Osaka Evessa stars Takumi Takagi and Daiki Doke, who engaged with participants and shared their love for the game.Adding to the festive atmosphere, mascots “Maidokun” from Osaka Evessa, “Nyassei” from Nippon Life, and “Mozuyan” from Osaka Prefecture made appearances, creating a warm and lively surroundings for all involved.

The basketball experience sessions were led by school coaches, alongside Takumi Takagi and Daiki Doke, under the guidance of MCs Yoshi and Narita. Participants of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned players, and spanning all ages, joined in the fun. Japanese national team members Hiroaki Konishi (february 8th and March 1st) and Renji Toriumi (March 1st) provided expert instruction,offering participants a rare prospect to learn from elite athletes. While some initially struggled with wheelchair maneuvering, the patient guidance from the pros helped them quickly adapt and navigate the court with increasing confidence. This mirrors the growing popularity of wheelchair basketball in the U.S., with the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) showcasing the unbelievable athleticism and competitive spirit of these athletes.

Even Takumi Takagi and Daiki Doke tried their hand at wheelchair basketball for the first time. It was a very valuable experience, said Takagi, while Doke added, I would like to promote the overall basketball game to further develop. The experience culminated in a mini-game featuring Kasai, Toriumi, and all participants. The event left a lasting impression, with many expressing surprise at the speed and agility of the Paralympic athletes.
