Local Badminton Team Soars at Provincials, coach Earns Top Honors

A squad of young badminton players from Saguenay-lac-Saint-Jean recently made a splash at the Provincial championships, showcasing their talent and sportsmanship. Led by head coach Léa Guérin, the team’s performance highlights the growing popularity and competitive spirit of badminton in the region.

The delegation included Audrey Guérin, representing the multipurpose school of Arvida, alongside Juliette Blackburn, Zoé Lavoie, Simon Gonzalez-Gagné, Raphaël Gaudreault, and Louis-simon Bourassa from the Mustangs of the Odyssey. For many, this was their first experience at a major competition, providing invaluable lessons and motivation for future seasons.

While the team didn’t bring home any medals this year, the experience gained is considered a major victory. As any seasoned athlete knows,the lessons learned from competition – the strategic thinking,the pressure management,and the teamwork – are often more valuable than the hardware. Think of it like a college basketball team making it to March Madness for the first time; the exposure and experience are crucial for building a winning program.

Coach Léa Guérin, in her first season as head coach after serving as an assistant, emphasized team unity and support.I always organized myself to find out where my young people were to have a united team. They were still around me or roughly, Guérin stated, highlighting her commitment to fostering a positive team environment.

Guérin’s passion for badminton and dedication to her players have clearly resonated.At just 22 years old, she transitioned quickly from player to coach, bringing a fresh perspective and enthusiasm to the program. Her philosophy centers on instilling a love for the sport, encouraging participation and advancement at all levels.

This approach seems to be working wonders. Zoé Lavoie, a student who had her first full season in badminton, qualified for the provincials after winning gold at the regional final. She praised Guérin’s coaching style,saying,I find her very kind and she is really dynamic. She always finds good ideas in training and you can easily be friends with Léa. It’s really easy with her.

lavoie also noted the strong team bond, stating, Our team is really united, compared to what I have seen in other teams. This camaraderie is reminiscent of accomplished sports teams at all levels, from high school football teams to professional baseball clubs, where a strong sense of unity often translates to success on the field.

The duo of Raphaël Gaudreault and Louis-Simon bourassa, competing as a team, secured two victories in six matches. They faced tough competition but held their own against some of the best teams in the province.

We told ourselves that regions were going to smash us because they are not bad more numerous,but we managed well against good regions that went far in the tournament, saeid Raphaël. Louis-Simon added, It happened better that I thought it was going to happen.

Their experience mirrors that of many young athletes who face initial doubts but rise to the occasion when given the opportunity. Their fathers also played badminton, adding a legacy element to their participation.

looking ahead, the team will continue to train, focusing on enjoyment and skill development. Despite having less training time compared to some other teams, Coach Guérin is proud of her players’ progress and competitive spirit.

Coach Guérin Recognized for Excellence

Léa Guérin’s dedication and impact have not gone unnoticed. She was recently honored by the Quebec Sports Sports Network Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, receiving the title of coach par excellence. This recognition is a testament to her hard work, innovative training methods, and commitment to growing the sport of badminton in the region.

“I am still used to managing groups of young people. Perhaps a little less with this age group, but as soon as I finished my secondary, I immediately made the jump as a coach so it allowed me to quickly take experience. ”
