1. John, your astounding career puts you in a league of your own, but how would you rate Federer and Djokovic’s performances in Dubai?
McEnroe: well, first off, it’s incredible what both Federer and Djokovic have achieved in Dubai. roger has won eight titles, which is just outstanding. He’s never been one to put all his eggs in one basket, playing tournaments he loves and where he feels he has a chance of winning. Dubai was definitely one of them.
Djokovic has five titles, and you have to remember, he’s only played there 13 times – that’s a crazy win rate! Plus, he’s beaten Federer and Nadal there, which shows how dominant he’s been in the UAE.
2. You mentioned playing where thay feel they have a chance of winning. Do you think perhaps that’s why Rafael Nadal, another dubai champion, hasn’t won more there?
McEnroe: That’s a fair point. Nadal’s not been to Dubai as much as the other two because he’s always going for those hard-court slams in March and April. Plus, Dubai’s played later in the season now, so it’s hard for Nadal, given his clay-court schedule. But he’s still got three titles there, which is pretty damn extraordinary.
3. Speaking of Nadal, let’s address the elephant in the room. People often forget that Nadal beat Federer in the 2006 Dubai final, interrupting Federer’s four-title run. Do you think that’s an underrated moment in Federer’s career?
McEnroe: Absolutely. That victory signified Nadal’s arrival on the big stage and his ascendancy to being a genuine threat to Federer’s dominance. It’s easy to forget now, but that was a major upset at the time, and it marked the beginning of their incredible rivalry. Federer’s resurgence in Dubai the following year was testament to his competitive fire, though.

McEnroe: Medvedev is my pick here. He’s been so close to winning Majors, so he knows how to handle pressure. He also played some of his best tennis towards the end of 2023, so he’s rolling into 2025 with confidence. Plus, he’s got a winning record against both Federer and Djokovic in Dubai. But we shouldn’t count out Rublev and Humbert – they’re both tough competitors.
