In a story that resonates with every underdog fan from teh sandlots of America to the hallowed grounds of college baseball, Tomohiro Shimamura, captain of Toyo university’s baseball team, etched his name into school lore with a dramatic, two-run homer that secured their promotion back to the frist division. Think Rudy Ruettiger, but with a bat adn a Jingu Stadium backdrop.

The stage was set on November 16,2024.toyo University, having dominated the second division, faced off against Tokyo University of Agriculture in a crucial promotion/relegation series.With his team holding a commanding lead, Shimamura stepped to the plate as a substitute, a moment that would define his college career.

“I’m the Most Surprised. I’m Dreaming.”

With the roar of the crowd echoing through Jingu Stadium, Shimamura delivered. On a 2-2 count, he launched a towering shot that landed deep into the left-field stands. The stadium erupted.Shimamura, rounding second base, pumped his fist, a moment captured in time. The homer wasn’t just icing on the cake; it was a testament to perseverance, dedication, and the unwavering belief in oneself.

“The juniors expanded the point difference, so I decided to aim for a big one. I entered the bat. I was the most surprised. I felt like I was dreaming. I felt happy to play baseball.”

Shimamura’s journey wasn’t paved with accolades. He wasn’t a highly touted recruit coming out of Sakaehoku High School. In fact, he readily admits that he wasn’t even close to being the best player on his team. But what he lacked in natural talent, he more than made up for in grit and determination.

He recalls being awestruck by the talent of his teammates upon arriving at Toyo University. When I entered, there were only ridiculous players. Despite the initial intimidation, Shimamura dedicated himself to honing his skills, spending countless hours in the batting cages, refining his swing, and pushing himself to improve.

His first two years were marked by limited playing time. At one point, he was even asked to consider becoming a student coach, a proposition that left him questioning his future as a player. Is it not accepted as a player …? he wondered.

But Shimamura refused to give up. His persistence paid off when a coaching change opened the door for him to finally make his debut in his third year.He seized the opportunity, proving his worth and earning the respect of his teammates and coaches.

The team faced adversity, including relegation to the second division. Shimamura experienced the highs of promotion and the lows of relegation, learning valuable lessons about teamwork, resilience, and leadership.

In his final year, Shimamura was named captain, a testament to his character and leadership qualities. Even though he wasn’t a star player, his coach recognized his ability to unite the team and inspire his teammates.

He understood that his words carried more weight when backed by action. He focused on being a role model,working tirelessly in practice and setting a positive example for his teammates.He was the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave,always willing to put in the extra effort.

Kazuki Takanaka,a freshman who played a key role in the team’s promotion,praised Shimamura’s dedication,noting that he was always the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave.
