Valmiera FC Coach Kalniņš Addresses Team Challenges and Future Plans
“The current situation is unfolding as was to be expected, though it feels like a sudden shock. We’re gearing up for the Premier League season, but there’s no denying the challenges we face. I had a sense that sanctions might come into play, but I also held onto hope that things would be resolved,” shares the head coach.
Efforts to stabilize the club began at the tail end of the previous season,with several player contracts being terminated. ”The club made a strategic decision to address the issues head-on, which led to parting ways with many players,” explains Kalniņš.
“Some players chose to stay—those who are well-suited for the Premier League level. They’ve been training with the belief that we’ll overcome these hurdles and assemble a competitive squad. though, the situation has taken an unexpected turn.”
Despite the setbacks,the club’s management is actively working on resolving the issues and plans to appeal for the necessary licensing.
“The club is committed to addressing all financial obligations and debts.My focus is on ensuring a fresh start, whether that’s through the 1st league or, ideally, the Premier League. For now,we’re scaling back our ambitions to avoid further financial strain,” says Kalniņš.
If the situation remains unresolved, some players may need to explore opportunities elsewhere. “Players like national team member Renārs Varslavāns,who are clearly at the premier League level,will likely seek higher-tier clubs. It’s unrealistic to expect them to compete in the 1st league,” the coach acknowledges.
However, even a transition to a lower league requires addressing financial and regulatory issues. “There’s no room for shortcuts. Our goal is to resolve these problems to ensure the club’s survival. Bankruptcy is the last thing anyone wants—it’s not in the interest of the owners, managers, or fans,” emphasizes Kalniņš.
“It’s crucial to get everything in order. The club’s existence is at stake, and we’re doing everything possible to avoid the worst-case scenario.”
Under normal circumstances, Valmiera FC would have been preparing for a training camp abroad. However, the current situation has forced them to stay in Latvia.”Fortunately, the weather has been favorable for outdoor training, and the field conditions are good.We’ve scheduled friendly matches to stay sharp, but the final squad composition remains uncertain. We’re relying on promising players from the second team who’ve shown potential. Right now, there are more questions than answers,” concludes Kalniņš.

The coach stresses the importance of avoiding stagnation.”It’s crucial not to get stuck in disappointment. We’re striving to move forward, focusing not just on overcoming obstacles but on growing stronger from them. That’s the strategy for ensuring a better foundation for seasons to come.”
Kalniņš has also emphasized the need for a collective approach.”It’s been a challenge to get everyone aligned, but we’re working towards a cohesive unit. This requires everyone to commit to the vision and support one another. We’re a team, after all.”
While the journey ahead is undoubtedly arduous, the coach remains hopeful. “There will be more challenges, but it’s our ability to adapt and grow that will define us. We’re aiming for long-term success, and that takes time and perseverance,” Kalniņš concludes.
