MACC’s chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, clarified that the inquiry uncovered no evidence of criminal activity related to accusations that the official had received allowances without the BAM council’s consent. A comprehensive report detailing the investigation’s findings will be presented to minister Yeoh for further review and action.

Lee Chong Wei: Well, frist and foremost, I’m glad to see that the investigation has been completed without uncovering any criminal wrongdoing. This is a positive step forward for BAM and Malaysian badminton. However, I think it’s crucial to recognize that just because no criminal activity was found, it doesn’t mean we should stop striving for greater transparency and accountability. BAM’s commitment to adopting MACC’s suggested measures is a good sign, but the real test will be in how these measures are implemented in the long term.
Moderator: That’s a fair point. BAM also thanked Youth and Sports Minister YB hannah Yeoh for her support during the investigation. Do you believe that such political involvement is necessary for sports organizations to function effectively?
Lee Chong wei: I think it’s a double-edged sword.On one hand, having the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports can provide resources and guidance that are invaluable to organizations like BAM. Conversely, I believe sports bodies should strive to be as independent as possible. Over-reliance on political figures can sometimes blur the lines between governance and external influence. BAM needs to ensure that its decisions are made in the best interest of the sport and its athletes, not to appease any political agenda.
Moderator: Speaking of athletes, BAM mentioned its gratitude to sponsors for their loyalty during this challenging period. How crucial is sponsor support in maintaining the integrity and success of a sports organization?
Lee Chong Wei: Sponsors play a vital role in the ecosystem of sports. Their financial support helps fund training programs, tournaments, and the advancement of young talent. But beyond the money, sponsors also bring credibility.If sponsors start pulling out due to controversies or lack of transparency, it can have a domino effect on the organization’s reputation. BAM is lucky to have sponsors who stood by them during this investigation, but this loyalty isn’t infinite. the association must continue to earn their trust through consistent, ethical practices.
Moderator: Absolutely. Now, MACC’s chief commissioner, Tan Sri azam Baki, stated that a comprehensive report will be presented to Minister Yeoh for further review. Do you think this report should be made public to maintain transparency?
Lee Chong Wei: Transparency is key in building trust. While I understand that some details may need to remain confidential due to legal or privacy concerns,a summary of the findings should be made available to the public. This would reassure stakeholders—be it players, sponsors, or fans—that BAM is serious about addressing governance issues. It’s not just about clearing the air; it’s about demonstrating a commitment to openness.

Lee Chong Wei: BAM has made important strides in recent years, but there’s always room for betterment. Firstly, they need to invest more in grassroots development. Talent isn’t discovered; it’s nurtured. Secondly, they should ensure that their governance structures are robust and inclusive. This means involving former players, coaches, and even fans in decision-making processes. Lastly, BAM must continue to support its athletes not just financially, but also by providing access to world-class coaching, facilities, and mental health resources. A strong BAM is one that puts its athletes first.
