Herne Women’s Basketball: A Resilient Fight Despite Another Loss
The Herner TC women’s basketball team suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in the Basketball Bundesliga, falling 60-65 to the rutronik Stars Keltern on Sunday evening. Despite the loss, the team’s performance offered a glimmer of hope for the upcoming weeks.
While the Herner women struggled to find their rhythm in the first quarter, they remained competitive throughout the game, keeping pace with the league-leading Keltern until the final buzzer. A late surge, fueled by paige Robinson’s three-pointer, brought the score to 58-61 with over a minute remaining, igniting hopes of overtime.However, Keltern’s strategic ball control and crucial offensive rebounds prevented Herne from capitalizing on the opportunity.
“Moast spectators came hoping we wouldn’t suffer a heavy defeat,” remarked Wolfgang Siebert, HTC chairman. “We lacked that crucial bit of luck.”
Despite the loss,Siebert acknowledged the team’s notable improvement compared to the previous week,highlighting their resilience and determination.
This setback extends Herne’s losing streak to four games. However, they remain firmly in contention for a playoff spot. With seven games remaining in the season, the HTC will face only three teams currently ranked above them, presenting a favorable schedule for a potential playoff push.
The upcoming five games, starting with a match against Wings Leverkusen on January 19th, offer Herne a chance to gain momentum. Facing opponents like MBC Halle, Eisvogel Freiburg, the Violets from Göttingen, and BC Marburg, the HTC has the opportunity to secure crucial victories and solidify their playoff aspirations.
While challenging encounters against Alba Berlin and the Saarlouis Royals await at the end of the regular season, Herne’s upcoming schedule provides a realistic pathway to secure a playoff berth independently.

Tanja: Luck always plays a role in sports, but I wouldn’t say it was the deciding factor here. Keltern did a great job controlling the ball in the final minutes, and those crucial offensive rebounds made a big difference. Herne needs to focus on sharpening their own execution, particularly in key moments.
Moderator: Looking ahead,Herne faces a relatively favorable schedule. Do you think they can capitalize on these upcoming matchups to secure a playoff berth?
tanja: Definitely. The next five games are critical.They need to come out strong against teams like Leverkusen, Halle, and Freiburg.
Winning even three of those five would give them a huge boost in confidence and put them in a great position for the final stretch of the season.The games against Alba Berlin and Saarlouis will be tough, but if Herne can build momentum, they have a real chance to make the playoffs.

Tanja: Keep believing in yourselves. They have the talent and the potential to be a prosperous team. Focus on playing smart, aggressive basketball, and most importantly, play together as a unit. They need to trust each other on the court and support each other through the highs and lows.
