A Legend Retires: Bourges Honors sarah Michel Boury
emotions ran high at Bourges’ Prado arena as Sarah Michel Boury, the team’s captain and a stalwart of the French national team, bid farewell to her illustrious career. The ceremony, held after Bourges’ resounding victory over Basket Landes (93-53), solidified their top spot in the Women’s League and served as a fitting tribute to a player who has left an indelible mark on the sport.
Bourges, recognizing Boury’s immense contributions, decided to retire her number 17 jersey, ensuring that no future player will wear it. This gesture underscores the profound impact Boury has had on the club, elevating her to legendary status.
The ceremony was a testament to Boury’s remarkable journey. Olivier lafargue, Bourges’ coach since 2017, eloquently captured the essence of her career: “For someone who began her career at Valenciennes, another powerhouse in women’s basketball, becoming a Bourges legend is no small feat. Initially, many questioned her unique playing style and doubted her ability to lead the team to victory. However, she proved them wrong, bringing immense value to the club. Today, everyone recognizes her contributions. For everything you have brought to Bourges, for all we have achieved together, thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Boury’s seven seasons with Bourges (2017-2024) were marked by an extraordinary haul of trophies: two French championship titles (2018, 2022), four French Cups (2018, 2019, 2020, 2024), a European Super Cup (2021), and a Eurocup (2022). Her success extended beyond club level, as she also boasts six medals with the French national team, including Olympic bronze in 2021 and silver in 2024.
Kristen Mann, Boury’s former teammate and fellow retiree, echoed the sentiments of many: “You are a true professional who always prioritized the team. You are the heart and soul of this club. You are one of a kind, and one of my favorite people on the planet.”
Overwhelmed with emotion, Boury addressed the crowd, reflecting on her remarkable journey: “I never imagined ending up here when I started my career. It took 20 years to play on this court, even tho I used to watch games here at the old Prado. This has been the most incredible experience. I was incredibly proud to wear this jersey, to be your captain. Thank you all. It was an honor to represent this club,to represent France. I will never forget.”
Boury’s retirement marks the end of an era for Bourges and French basketball. Her legacy, however, will continue to inspire generations of players to come.
