Bulgarian Skier Popov Makes History with Stunning Slalom Victory
Standing at a modest 164 centimeters, Albert Popov carved his name into Bulgarian skiing history with a remarkable slalom victory in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy. This triumph marks the second time Bulgaria has tasted success in the Alpine Ski World Cup, a feat last achieved 45 years ago by petar Popangelov.
Popov, who trailed in seventh place after the initial run, showcased exceptional skill and determination on the second course, overtaking Swiss skier loïc Meillard by a mere 44/100th of a second to claim the top spot. Croatian Samuel Kolega secured third place, finishing 46/100th behind Popov.
“This is a dream come true,” exclaimed Popov, who had previously secured a third-place finish in Palisades Tahoe less than two years ago. “I’ve been working towards this victory for so long, it’s simply astonishing.”
While Popov has consistently ranked among the top 15 skiers, his victory was aided by a challenging course that proved to be a stumbling block for many favorites. Norwegian Atle Lie McGrath, who held the best time in the first run, faltered near the finish line and was forced to retire. His compatriot, Henrik Kristoffersen, finished fifth, relinquishing the lead in the Slalom World Cup standings to Meillard.
Amiez Shines for france
The first run saw several prominent skiers, including Olympic slalom champion Clément Noël and recent Alta Badia winner Timon Haugan, eliminated early. Noël, still recovering from an ankle injury sustained in December, was caught out by the course’s initial section and was forced to withdraw after just ten seconds.
Despite Noël’s early exit, the French team delivered a commendable performance.Steven Amiez, mirroring his result in Levi, Finland, secured a fourth-place finish, narrowly missing the podium by a mere 18/100th of a second. Paco Rassat, who started 25th after the first run, climbed an impressive thirteen places in the second run to finish in 12th position.
swiss skier Marco odermatt, who is not participating in the slalom events, maintains his lead in the overall World Cup standings with 630 points, holding a 116-point advantage over Kristoffersen.
The slalom specialists will be back in action on Saturday in Adelboden,Switzerland,followed by a busy January schedule featuring three more slaloms in Wengen,kitzbühel,and Schladming,all in Switzerland and Austria.
