East Africa gears Up for the 2024 CHAN Tournament
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the draw for the final phase of the 2024 african Nations Championship (CHAN) will be held in Nairobi, Kenya. Football fans can mark their calendars for Wednesday, January 15th, 2025, at 5:00 PM GMT, when the Kenyatta International Convention Center will host this exciting event.
This continental competition, exclusively featuring players from domestic leagues across Africa, will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from February 1st to 28th, 2025.The 2023 CHAN, held in Algeria, saw Senegal emerge victorious after a thrilling penalty shootout against the host nation. This year’s tournament promises to be equally captivating, showcasing the immense talent within African football and providing a platform for rising stars to shine.
One such example is young prodigy,Camera Sheet,who has since become a global sensation,recently being crowned the best young african player at the 2024 CAF Awards.His journey exemplifies the potential of the CHAN to propel promising athletes onto the international stage.
A New Chapter for the CHAN
interestingly, Algeria, the 2023 CHAN runners-up, will not be participating in the 2024 edition. The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced this decision in September 2024,stating their focus will shift towards developing youth categories in both men’s and women’s football.
This absence presents a unique opportunity for the co-hosts, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, to gain valuable experience and prepare for future continental tournaments, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 18 qualified nations ready to battle for CHAN glory are: Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Congo, Central African Republic, DR congo, uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, Morocco, Rwanda, Madagascar, Angola, and Zambia.

Dennis: Absolutely! Algeria’s absence definately shakes things up. It’s a golden opportunity for Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to really make a mark. Their young players can gain invaluable experience playing against some of the best on the continent, and this could be the boost they need to perform well in future continental tournaments.
Moderator: It’s certainly shaping up to be a fiercely competitive tournament. who do you think are the favorites to lift the trophy this time around?
Dennis: Senegal are the defending champions, and they’ve always been a strong force in African football. Don’t count out Nigeria either—they’ve got a history of producing exceptional talent. but I wouldn’t underestimate the home advantage.Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, playing in front of their passionate supporters, could pull off some surprises.
