Adding fuel to the fire, Montreal Gazette columnist Jack Todd highlighted Lopušanová’s potential in a December article, urging the Montreal Victoire, a PWHL team, to scout the young star. todd humorously suggested that the Canadiens, Montreal’s NHL team, should also keep an eye on Lopušanová, who honed her skills in the same boys’ league as NHL star Juraj Slafkovský, even surpassing his point total at the same age.
Lopušanová’s growing popularity is evident in the online world. A viral post by a Canadian fan last year even jokingly proposed that the Montreal Victoire intentionally lose games in 2026 to secure the top draft pick and select Lopušanová.
While the question isn’t if Lopušanová will be a high draft pick,but when,the timeline for her entry into the PWHL might differ from the men’s game.Unlike Slafkovský,who was drafted first overall by Montreal at 18 and immediately entered the NHL,Lopušanová,currently 16,will likely need a few more years of development before making her PWHL debut.
Considering the current trajectory of women’s hockey and the increasing opportunities for young talent, it’s safe to say that Nela Lopušanová’s future is incredibly bright. Her exceptional skills and dedication promise to make her a force to be reckoned with in the PWHL and beyond.

Moderator: So Hailey, we’re buzzing about this young Slovakian player, Nela Lopušanová. 18 points in three games at the U18 World Championships is just incredible! what’s your take on her potential?
Hayley: Honestly, it’s exciting to see such raw talent. Lopušanová’s stats are eye-popping. Dominating a tournament like that at 16? That’s special.
She’s got the skill, the drive, and she’s playing against the best in her age group.
To be mentioned alongside juraj Slafkovský, who’s already making waves in the NHL, that’s a huge testament to her abilities.
Moderator: absolutely. Kyle Kushman, a well-respected hockey journalist, even predicted she could be a top pick in the upcoming PWHL draft. Do you agree with that assessment?
hayley: It’s definitely possible. The PWHL is gaining momentum every day. They’re attracting investment, top players are joining, and the league is focused on creating something truly special for women’s hockey.
Lopušanová has the potential to be a cornerstone player in this league.

Do you think Lopušanová will follow a similar path, or will she need more development time in other leagues before making that jump to the PWHL?
Hayley:
It’s different for women’s hockey. The development pathway
isn’t as clear-cut.
While Lopušanová is extremely talented, she will likely benefit from a few more years of seasoning before she’s ready for the PWHL.
The league is becoming more competitive, and the physicality and skill level are only going up.
Moderator:
It sounds like “when,” not “if,” she enters the PWHL. Looking forward, what does lopušanová’s rise mean for the future of women’s hockey?
Hayley:
It’s incredibly inspiring. Young girls seeing someone like her dominate on the world stage can ignite a passion for the sport.
Lopušanová’s success can be a catalyst for attracting more young girls to hockey, which will only make
the future of the sport brighter.
