Last Friday, the pediatric ward of Catania Polyclinic became a scene of shocking violence when a patient’s relative physically assaulted two doctors. The incident unfolded after one doctor questioned the accuracy of facts provided by the individual. this led to a brutal attack involving kicks and punches, with a second doctor who attempted to intervene also becoming a target.
This disturbing event has ignited widespread condemnation and renewed calls for enhanced protection for healthcare workers. Carmelo De Caudo, general secretary of the CGIL of Catania, and Concetta La Rosa, general secretary of the FP Cgil of Catania, issued a joint statement expressing their “great and sincere solidarity” with the attacked doctors.They emphasized that these professionals were simply fulfilling their duties and highlighted the alarming trend of violence against healthcare personnel.
“This savage attack underscores the dangerous climate of violence that healthcare workers face,” De Caudo and La Rosa stated. They pointed to previous appeals made to institutions for increased security measures, including the establishment of a special table at the prefecture. They believe that healthcare workers should have access to tools like electronic devices for emergency assistance to ensure their safety.
Catania’s mayor, enrico Trantino, also voiced his strong disapproval of the incident.He characterized the attack as a “serious assault on civil coexistence,” notably egregious given its location in a children’s ward. Trantino personally contacted the doctors to offer his support and express the solidarity of the city. He urged the relevant authorities to take decisive action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

According to the World Health Institution, one in four healthcare workers experience physical violence at work, with verbal abuse being even more prevalent.
