The spirit of the season couldn’t deter Asturian runners from lacing up their shoes and hitting the pavement on the last day of 2024. Over 15,000 participants took part in nearly thirty “San Silvestre” races spread across the region, showcasing the enduring passion for running in Asturias.
While the races in Oviedo, Gijón, and avilés drew the largest crowds, the festive spirit extended to 25 other towns and villages. From Nava to Pola de Allande,runners embraced the challenge,demonstrating the widespread appeal of this annual tradition.
The Oviedo race, the most populous San Silvestre in the Principality with over 6,500 participants, saw Alejandro Onís and Mariam Benkert emerge victorious. Both athletes, favorites going into the race after securing second place in the previous year, delivered impressive performances. Onís, representing Club Oriente Atletismo, clocked in at an impressive 15.56, while Benkert, from Bilbao Atlético, secured her win with a time of 19.28.
In Gijón, Rubén Marqués and Isabel Barreiro successfully defended their titles, adding to the excitement of the event. Marqués, representing Universidad de oviedo, repeated his 2023 victory, while Barreiro, a member of Club Atletismo Adidas, claimed her seventh San silvestre win, solidifying her dominance in the race.The Gijón race attracted 5,200 participants in the main event, further highlighting the growing popularity of this festive running tradition.
