The recent robbery of Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic’s home highlights a disturbing trend: professional athletes, particularly those with high earning potential, are increasingly becoming targets for sophisticated criminal organizations. ESPN reported on December 29th that approximately $30,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from Doncic’s residence while he was away.Fortunately, Doncic and his family were unharmed.
This incident follows a string of similar burglaries targeting prominent athletes across various sports. In October 2023, the homes of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and teammate Travis Kelce were burglarized. Earlier this month, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s home was also targeted while he was playing a game.
The NBA has not been immune to this trend either. Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis, Minnesota guard Mike Conley, and other NBA stars have also fallen victim to home invasions.
Concerned by this alarming rise in burglaries, both the NFL and NBA have issued warnings to their players, urging them to take extra precautions to protect their homes.according to documents obtained by The Associated Press, the NFL has alerted players that their homes are increasingly being targeted by ”skilled and organized thieves.”
The FBI has linked some of these thefts to international South American criminal organizations, which are employing advanced technologies like surveillance drones and signal jamming devices to carry out their crimes.

Moderator: The fact that sophisticated criminal organizations, potentially international ones, are involved makes this even more unsettling. What can athletes do to protect themselves and their families?
Kevin Martin: Good question. I think it starts with being proactive and vigilant. Athletes need to invest in robust home security systems, including surveillance cameras, alarm systems, and maybe even consider hiring security personnel, especially when they’re traveling. It’s also vital to be mindful of social media posts – avoid broadcasting travel plans or flaunting expensive belongings online. Criminals are using social media to scout potential targets.
Moderator: The leagues seem to be taking this issue seriously, issuing warnings and security advice to their players. Do you think they’re doing enough?
Kevin Martin: I applaud the leagues for taking this seriously. Though,I believe they coudl do even more.
Maybe they could offer more complete security consultations and even subsidize the cost of installing home security systems for their players. After all, player safety should be a top priority.
Moderator: Some might argue that athletes, with their high salaries, should be able to afford their own security measures. what’s your take on that?
Kevin Martin: While I agree that athletes are well-compensated, this isn’t just about individual obligation. These are highly visible figures who are targeted specifically because of their wealth and status.
The leagues have a moral obligation to help protect their players, and that includes providing them with the resources and support they need to stay safe.
Moderator: what message would you give to young athletes who are coming up through the ranks and might be unaware of these dangers?
Kevin Martin: Be smart, be prepared, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your safety is paramount, and there’s no shame in taking all the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones.
