Liliana: It’s truly inspiring to see Huila back on the national stage. I believe it’s a combination of factors.The Huila Basketball League, led by Edwin Velázquez, has been incredibly dedicated to reviving the sport at the grassroots level. we’ve seen increased participation in youth leagues, improved training facilities, and a real focus on developing young players.
That dedication definitely shows in the Intercollegiate Games results. You must be incredibly proud of Huila’s athletes, winning silver in the youth men’s and pre-youth women’s categories and bronze in the youth women’s category.
Liliana: Absolutely! These young athletes are incredibly talented and driven. Seeing them compete at such a high level fills me with so much pride. It’s a testament to their hard work and the support they receive from coaches, families, and the community.

Liliana: It’s crucial! Regular, high-level competition allows them to test their skills, learn from experienced opponents, and grow as players. It also exposes them to different playing styles and strategies, which is essential for their advancement.I do wonder if focusing on the 3×3 modality, as the league plans to do in 2025, might dilute their efforts in the conventional game.
That’s an interesting point.Do you think focusing on 3×3 will benefit Huila’s basketball program in the long run?
Liliana: 3×3 is a dynamic and exciting format that’s gaining popularity worldwide. Focusing on it could attract new fans and sponsors, which would be beneficial for the sport in Huila. Though, I believe it’s critically important to strike a balance and not neglect the traditional game format. Both have their merits and can contribute to the overall growth of basketball in the region.
The selection of players like Danna Suarez for the colombian national team is a clear indication of Huila’s rising star on the national scene. Where do you see Huila basketball headed in the next five years?
Liliana: I’m incredibly optimistic. With the current momentum and the dedication of the league and the community, I foresee Huila becoming a dominant force in Colombian basketball. We have the talent, the passion, and the leadership to achieve great things. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Huila team competing for a national championship title very soon.
