Mark Buehrle: It’s definitely a gamble. You’re talking about a pitcher who’s shown flashes of brilliance but hasn’t quite solidified himself as a top-tier starter. And then there’s the surgery. Tommy John recovery is never a guarantee.
Moderator: Absolutely. Sandoval’s 2024 season was cut short, and his 2023 ERA was over 5.0. What gives the Red Sox confidence he can bounce back?
mark Buehrle: Well, they obviously see something in him.His performance in the 2023 World Baseball Classic representing Mexico was probably a big factor. He pitched well against high-level competition, and that can’t be ignored. Plus, they’re likely banking on his six years of MLB experience. He’s got the knowledge,and maybe a fresh start in Boston is what he needs to thrive.
Moderator: Do you think the Red Sox’s strategy of utilizing pitchers based on matchups and needing, similar to what they did with aroldis Chapman, makes this signing more palatable?
Mark Buehrle: It’s a smart move on their part. Having a pitcher like Sandoval who can come in and give you quality innings in specific situations is valuable. Especially considering the injury risk. They’re not putting all their eggs in this basket, they’re diversifying their pitching staff.
Moderator: You mentioned the injury risk. Sandoval isn’t expected to be ready untill the latter half of the 2025 season. How difficult is it for a pitcher to regain form after such a long layoff?
Mark Buehrle: It’s tough. You lose that rhythm, that sharpness. You have to literally build yourself back up from scratch. But there are plenty of success stories out there.
Moderator: With the competitive landscape of the AL East, is this signing enough to put the Red Sox over the top and back in playoff contention?
Mark Buehrle: It’s a step in the right direction. But the AL East is brutal. They need more pieces, more consistency from their existing players.Sandoval is a piece of the puzzle, but he’s not the missing piece.
