The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has unveiled it’s list of nominees for the Class of 2025, featuring a stellar lineup of NBA and WNBA icons. Among the hopefuls is Spanish center marc Gasol, marking his first-ever nomination for basketball’s highest honor.
Gasol, a seasoned veteran who retired in 2021, boasts an remarkable resume.His career highlights include a coveted NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019 and the prestigious NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 2013. Gasol’s journey spanned over a decade, representing teams like the Memphis Grizzlies and the Los Angeles Lakers, before returning to his Spanish roots with Barcelona and Girona.
Joining gasol on the ballot are other NBA luminaries such as Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, and renowned coach Doc Rivers. The women’s game is equally well-represented, with nominees including Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Sylvia Fowles, and Chamique Holdsclaw, all pillars of WNBA history.

Moderator: Sue, welcome! It’s an honor to have you. This year’s Hall of Fame class is absolutely stacked. How does it feel to be included among such a distinguished group?
Sue Bird: It’s incredibly humbling. To be recognized alongside players like Carmelo Anthony, Dwight howard, and my fellow WNBA greats maya Moore, Sylvia Fowles, and Chamique Holdsclaw is truly an honor. It speaks to the dedication and passion we all poured into the game.
Moderator: absolutely. Speaking of dedication,your career achievements are nothing short of remarkable. Four WNBA championships, five Olympic gold medals, and countless individual accolades – you’ve etched your name in basketball history. Do you have a particular memory or accomplishment that stands out as your proudest moment?
Sue Bird: (Laughs) Honestly, it’s hard to choose just one. Each championship, each Olympic victory felt incredibly special in its own way. But if I had to pick,leading the Storm to our championship in 2018,after a tough few years,was incredibly rewarding.It showed our resilience and dedication as a team.
Moderator: That was a remarkable comeback story. And speaking of comebacks, the Hall of fame eligibility waiting period has been reduced to two years for retired candidates.
What are your thoughts on this change, and do you think it will impact the selection process this year?
Sue Bird: I think it’s a fair change. there are incredible players who retire and promptly deserve consideration. The two-year wait allows them to be fresh in everyone’s minds and arguably makes the selection process even more competitive.
Moderator: This certainly opens doors for more recent stars to be inducted sooner. Now, let’s talk about the men on the ballot. We have Marc Gasol,a former NBA champion and defensive Player of the Year,joining the likes of Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard. What do you think of their chances?
Sue Bird: Marc Gasol is a fantastic player, and his international success adds another dimension to his resume. Carmelo Anthony is a scoring machine and a three-time Olympic champion; his case is undeniable. And dwight Howard, with his championship ring and dominant presence on the court, deserves serious consideration.
