Kuzminová Aims for World Cup Return with Strong IBU Cup Performance
After a year marked by a comeback to professional biathlon and support for the Slovak national team, Anastasia Kuzminová is proving her place among the sport’s elite. The 2022-2023 season demanded she reaffirm her competitive edge, and she’s doing just that.Kuzminová’s season began in the IBU Cup, where an initial setback on the shooting range prevented her from securing a spot in the World Cup. Tho, she bounced back with a remarkable performance in Thursday’s sprint race in Obertilliach, finishing in an remarkable 8th place and leading the Slovak contingent. This result highlights Kuzminová’s exceptional running speed, a hallmark of her career. In Obertilliach, she clocked the fourth fastest time on the course. While her shooting accuracy has shown some fluctuation, with two missed targets in prone and a clean standing stage, her overall performance was commendable. starting 14th after the shooting range, she surged to an 8th place finish, just 40 seconds behind the winner.
This performance underscores the importance of consistent shooting for Kuzminová’s success. A comparison with former World Cup competitor, Norwegian Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold, illustrates this point. Tandrevold, known for her speed, was only 16 seconds faster than Kuzminová in Obertilliach, a relatively small margin.
Kuzminová believes that with improved shooting accuracy, she could be a contender for top 10 finishes in the World Cup. “I’m happy with my running time, which was the fourth fastest with a small gap,” she stated. “I worked to my maximum, and I know I still have room for betterment.”
While Kuzminová aims for the World Cup, teammate Ema Kapustová opted for the IBU Cup, focusing on refining her skills under the guidance of coach Martin Otčenáš. Kapustová faces a different challenge: closing the gap in running speed. Despite a perfect shooting performance in Hochfilzen the previous week, she couldn’t qualify for the pursuit race due to a notable time deficit.
In Obertilliach, Kapustová again demonstrated her shooting prowess, hitting all targets, but her running time left her trailing in 16th place. Júlia Machyniaková, the third Slovak competitor, finished 72nd.
The IBU Cup continues with a mass start race and mixed relay events. If Kuzminová maintains her strong form, a return to the World Cup in January, possibly at Oberhof, seems likely. “If everyone agrees that I belong in the World Cup, I would be happy to start in Oberhof,” Kuzminová added.
