Werder Bremen’s Justin Njinmah to Undergo Ankle Surgery: Setback for Striker’s Season

As SV Werder Bremen announced today, striker Justin Njinmah will undergo ankle surgery on Thursday. This means that the 23-year-old top performer will be out for several weeks.

For Ole Werner’s team – in which the two ÖFB national players Marco Friedl and Romano Schmid also play – Njinmah’s failure means a bitter setback. The German contributed six goals and two assists in 24 games.

Injury dates back to March

The 23-year-old sustained his ankle injury during the warm-up before the Bundesliga game against Union Berlin on March 16th. After treatment he was able to play, but had to take a break recently.

“We then had various examinations carried out on the ankle joint and discovered a free part of the joint that was causing the problems and is now being removed surgically,” Clemens Fritz, head of professional football at Werder Bremen, is quoted as saying on the club’s website.

Replacement is ready

Njinmah’s role will probably be taken by homegrown player Nick Woltemade, who is moving to VfB Stuttgart and who took up the position in the double leadership alongside Marvin Duksch on the last matchday against Wolfsburg.

In the Bundesliga, Werder are in tenth place after 27 match days and are therefore firmly in midfield. Eleven points are missing both in international business and in the direct relegation zone.
