According to a report, the Grizzlies have traded Steven Adams to the Rockets in exchange for Victor Oladipo and three second-round picks.
As for Oladipo, he has also been out all season and it’s unclear when or if he’ll play again. He tore the patellar tendon on his left knee during the playoffs last season while playing for the Miami Heat, which was the latest in a string of serious injuries for the former All-Star. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer and will likely leave the Grizzlies at that point.
Despite the Rockets losing Adams for this season, they are focused on the long-term and anticipate his return to bolster their interior presence. While he may not contribute much offensively, Adams is a dependable rebounder, defender, and screener. Prior to his injury last season, he was averaging a career-best 11.5 rebounds. Known for his strong camaraderie, he is highly respected among his peers and can offer valuable guidance to emerging center Alperen Sengun.
The Grizzlies are eagerly anticipating a brighter future following a difficult season. Ja Morant faced a 25-game suspension and then suffered a shoulder injury that ended his season shortly after his debut. Along with Morant and Adams, the team has also been missing Brandon Clarke for the entire season and has experienced several other important players facing long-term injuries, such as Marcus Smart.
According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets have reached an agreement to trade Steven Adams for Victor Oladipo and a total of three second-round picks (two in 2024 and one in 2025).
Adams has been sidelined for more than a year due to ongoing knee issues. His last game was on January 22, 2023, and he was unable to play for the rest of the season due to a sprained PCL in his right knee. Although he was expected to return this season, he ultimately had to undergo surgery in October when non-surgical treatment was not successful in relieving instability. The Grizzlies stated that he is projected to fully recover for the 2024-25 season.
So far, 21 players have played in a game for them. However, Jaren Jackson Jr., David Roddy, and Ziaire Williams are the only ones who have not been absent for at least 10 games. As a result, they are currently in 13th place in the Western Conference with a record of 18-29.
They are currently five games away from securing a spot in the Play-In Tournament and it would not be wise for them to aim for it. It is probably best for them to end up in the lottery, where they can acquire another skilled young player to join their core of Morant, Jackson, and Desmond Bane. Trading Adams would also give them more financial flexibility and room on their roster for what is expected to be a crucial offseason.
