These are very delicate hours, perhaps the last on this Earth, however Anthony Goberta former Superbike rider who, despite not winning world titles, has left his mark on this sport, for better or for worse. The Australian is dying, as his family confirmed, due to an illness that struck him suddenly.

The message from Gobert’s brother: “Anthony is dying”

Aaron Gobert, also a pilot, he wrote in a post on social media that his brother is “currently hospitalized for palliative care“, and who is currently on the edge of his life “after a short illness. We will provide any updates in due course.”

A troubled life

Gobert then explained: “In such a difficult time, the videos of Anthony that are circulating in such a troubled phase of his life are cause for concern. However, on Anthony’s behalf, we must thank his many fans.”

The brother of the rider who also competed in the 500 class of the MotoGP between 1997 and 2000 refers to the unpleasant episode which in 2019 saw Anthony hit by a baseball bat in his home, which arose from a fight after a dinner in a restaurant which had given rise to a settlement of accounts. Gobert ended up in intensive careand subsequently disappeared, with his brother Aaron tracking him down after more than a year of searching.

The Australian’s life has indeed been a remarkable “What if..”. Talent was lost among excesses, primarily the abuse of illicit substances and also alcohol. In his discontinuous career Gobert has only collected eight victories in SBK, between 1994 and 2006, in seasons riding Honda, Ducati, Yamaha and Suzuki. In between, the participations in the British and American Superbike championships, and also in the Suzuka 8 Hours.
