Dominic Thiem opens the new season in Brisbane
For Dominic Thiem, the 2024 season starts with qualification for the ATP 250 tournament in Brisbane. Since Friday, the former world number three has now known his first opponent in the new season. Fifth-seeded Thiem will face 20-year-old James McCabe in the first qualifying round on Saturday.
McCabe is a largely unknown quantity and was mostly in action on the Challenger Tour last season. The Australian, who was born in the Philippines, is currently in position 272 in the ranking, 174 places behind Thiem.
Should Thiem, who trained with Rafael Nadal on Friday, win against McCabe, he would face Giulio Zeppieri or Omar Jasika in the fight for a main draw ticket. There are no other German-speaking starters taking part in the Brisbane qualification.
