Daniil Medvedev on his farewell to Turin 2023
If Daniil Medvedev had his own stationery (and who knows – the great Russian would certainly be capable of doing so), it would be questionable whether the victory at the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi would find an entry on the letterhead. But Medvedev seems to have enjoyed the exhibition tournament in the Eagles team with Mirra Andreeva, Sofia Kenin and Andrey Rublev. And he will have taken a few cents in entry and prize money with him.
Daniil Medvedev now has a few weeks until his next really serious appearance. As is well known, Meddy will not play any preparatory tournament before the Australian Open; the Russians are still excluded from the United Cup. Medvedev won five titles in the past season, bringing his total to 20 championships. Which he won at 20 different locations.
Medvedev, Sinner, Alcaraz pull away
Which would also allow a triumph for the first major in 2024. The now 27-year-old Medvedev had already reached the finals in Melbourne, but had to admit defeat to Rafael Nadal around 2022. The year before he had failed due to Novak Djokovic. For whom Daniil Medvedev has nothing but praise.
“The only thing we can be sure of: Novak is always there,” Medvedev explained in an interview with The National. “I could fall out of the top ten, Novak is always there.” In fact, with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, Medvedev has separated himself somewhat from the rest of the field and, with the Spaniard and the South Tyrolean, forms something like the second tier of the world’s best behind him distant industry leader Djokovic.
Tsitsipas has to defend points
“We separated ourselves from the rest at a certain point, especially at the end in terms of points,” Medvedev continued. “But this also shows us that every season can be different. Stefanos Tsitsipas has reached the final at the Australian Open. For various reasons he had a difficult end to the season. But he can always come back and overtake me, Sinner or Carlos.”
At the beginning of the season, however, this is hardly possible: While Tsitsipas has to defend his 1,200 points from the last edition in Melbourne, Daniil Medvedev can make significant gains. In 2023 he had already failed in the third round to Sebastian Korda.
