Today, in this space that I treasure so much, I am going to talk to you about what I felt while watching the great game between the Houston Texans and the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday. Before going fully into what concerns us, I want to present the column by making a kind of analogy, which goes like this:
One of the many skills I was forced to learn when I moved out of my parents’ house (even being older than Tommy DeVito, I must admit) is plant care.
I had never had a fascination with the universe of flora. Even today, I don’t think I could name five types of plants, and every time I need to repot one or remove soil from a pot, I ask for help.
I acquired new concepts, like that there are “indoor or outdoor” plants. I understood that watering does not consist of throwing five liters of water into each pot until it overflows. Now, I know that if there is a leaf or branch that withers, it is best to cut it so that the living parts of the plant gain more strength.
Let’s say that I handle some basic concepts and I can say, with some pride (and inevitably comparing myself with my friends), that I take good care of my little plants.
That’s as far as I’m going. As you can see, I am far from being an expert on the subject. My essay on nature and plant care would be 153 words long. I don’t think it’s enough to publish in a popular science magazine or for Pomona Sprout to hire me as her assistant for herbology classes.
What I can talk about at length (maybe even going overboard) is the relationship between the NFL and its Quarterbacks.
I believe that, of all the factors that contribute to the success of the NFL and make it the best sports league in the world, the most decisive is the existence of multiple QBs of truly elite class.
As long as we have quarterbacks who meet the necessary requirements to push the product, contributing off the field (as protagonists in marketing campaigns, as covers of Madden or as role models for young people) and especially on the field, demonstrating their talent, winning games and Superbowls, there will be NFL for a while.
