This is the second time this season that “Rīgas Zeļļi” and “Prometey” are holding their home games together on the same day in “Arena Rīga”. Previously, it happened at the very beginning of the season, gathering about 500 fans, and “Zeļļi” president Edgars Buļs admitted that he hopes to gather a wider audience for the next match.
In terms of sports, “Zeļļi” have done their homework, starting the season with four wins in five games. This makes it possible to occupy the highest place among Latvian teams in the tournament table.
However, only today “Zeļliai” will have their first game against one of the other usual favorites – the title-holder BK “Ventspils” will play as opponents.
“Ventspils” team had more losses at the beginning of the season – both against “Liepāja”, “TalTech” and “VEF Rīga”, when they lost with a difference of 39 points, but a few days ago they managed to return to the winning ways with +18 in Valmiera .
At the beginning of the season, “Ventspils” has two players among the top 3 scorers in the league – Ishmaels El-Amin scored an average of 22 points and Linard Jaunzem has 19 points. In the meantime, Dāvids Vīksne was effective for “Zeļli” who averaged 16.8 points per game (eighth place in the league).
“VEF Rīga” did not have an ideal start to the season either, which had to fight with injury problems and accumulated more losses than usual in October – only three wins in seven games (in all tournaments).
VEF came close to turning the script around in the middle of the week as they were going to fight for an extra-time victory after a tense Champions League match in France, but a scandalous turn of events led to a mistake in the scoreboard being noticed when VEF were mistakenly awarded a point, resulting in this game also ended in VEF’s loss.
After returning from France, VEF should expect a tough match in the local league as well. Ukrainian “Prometey” is the favorite of the league and has not yet suffered a single loss this season, mostly destroying its competitors (the smallest advantage was +15 against “Keila”). “Prometey” also had a Eurocup match in the middle of the week, beating “Cedevita Olimpija” 90:83.
