“Yes, Argano and Sacamir for me too. However, someone else can stick out the roses. To tell the truth, I don’t really trust the Irish,” says the legendary jockey Josef Váňa Sr., who as a trainer will send a ten-year-old gelding named Lodgian Whistle to the race with jockey Ondřej Velk. The pair is among the wider range of favourites, the bookmaker Tipsport gives them odds of 9:1 to win.
The rate on Sacamira is exactly half. The gelding has matured into a great crosser and at the same time is a very reliable jumper. “His great asset is above all his excellent finish and ability to run on any ground. In the August qualification, he also refuted the fact that he should have a problem with the demanding deep ground, because in extreme conditions and in heavy rain, he very certainly won before Talent,” says one of Tipsport’s bookmakers, Petr Karlík.
The second hottest candidate for the overall triumph is the nine-year-old gelding Argano with jockey Martin Liška, who mastered the final qualification. The imaginary winner’s steps are completed by the aforementioned twelve-year-old winner Talent in the saddle with Pavel Složil Jr. The odds for them are 7:1 and 8.75:1, respectively.
In addition, Argano has finished on the box in five of the last six races and wants to improve last year’s fifth place in Velká Pardubická. “He is systematically improving in cross-country racing. Martin Liška, trainer and rider in one person, traditionally leads him from behind and then relies on his great finish,” says Karlík.
Next comes the aforementioned Lodgian Whistle, for whom the question is whether he can last the entire 6,900-meter course at a high pace. In the event of a mass finish, he will not be among the favorites. The 12-year-old winner from 2021 Talent can certainly surprise the biggest favorites, as well as the defender Mr Spex, who would certainly like a harder and faster surface on Sunday.
Other horses already have odds of 10:1 and higher. “I would also point out Godfrey. He should at least attack the board. The talented gelding, only seven years old, made a huge jump in performance this year, he is the son of the great hurdler Partoutatou,” says Karlík. On the contrary, the two horses of Irish trainer Peter Maher are the biggest outsiders. Jet Fighter has odds of 88:1 and Alpha Male equal to 100:1.
