Spain Triumphs Over England in World Cup Final: Olga Carmona Leads the Way

Spain climbs to the roof of the world. La Roja won their first major international final by dominating England on Sunday in Sydney by the narrowest of margins (1-0). A goal from their captain Olga Carmona (29th), a good technical mastery and the response in the fight offer the Spaniards supreme happiness against disappointing English. Despite great tensions before the competition, Jorge Vilda and his protégés were able to find the winning formula.

Despite the pressure of a first World Cup final, the two teams immediately entered their match. With the same starting lineup as in the previous round and therefore without Lauren James, back from suspension but a substitute, England wanted to show off their athletic power. Spain resisted and then made their collective technical quality speak for themselves.

Carmona leads the way

The debates got carried away from the first quarter of an hour, with a shot on the crossbar signed Lauren Hemp (16th). La Roja’s response was immediate with a huge opportunity for the nugget Salma Paralluelo and Alba Redondo who stumbled on Mary Earps (17th). Alexia Putellas, she watched all this from the bench. The Spaniards continued their momentum and their captain Carmona opened the scoring with a nice cross shot after Lucy Bronze lost the ball (1-0, 29th). Paralluelo also found the English post just before the break (45th + 1).

On the restart, Sarina Wiegman, England’s Dutch coach, took matters into her own hands and launched James and Chloe Kelly while switching to a four-man defense. However, this option did not bear fruit because its players remained ill-inspired and muddled like the disappointing Lauren Hemp or Ella Toone.

Earps stoppe the penalty d’Hermoso

It was even the Spaniards, more consistent and led by the excellent Barcelona player Aitana Bonmati, who remained the most dangerous. Mariona Caldentey forced Mary Earps to relax (50′) then Bonmati sent a heavy shot just over the target (62′). Jennifer Hermoso even had the opportunity to break on a penalty following a handball from Keira Walsh spotted by the VAR but hit him softly and Earps kept England alive (70th). Reinvigorated by this stoppage of their door, the Lionesses regained energy but remained hopelessly helpless on the offensive level despite 14 minutes of additional time.

The European champions are disillusioned and their coach Wiegman loses in the World Cup final as in 2019 with the Netherlands. For Spain, it is the consecration after the crisis and the sidelining of many rebels. She succeeds the United States and, with Barça double reigning European champions, her reign is likely to last.
