Runners-up Borussia Dortmund may have to do without national player Karim Adeyemi and new signing Felix Nmecha in the first round of the DFB Cup. “There is a question mark behind both professionals,” said coach Edin Terzic before the match at regional league team TSV Schott Mainz on Saturday. He also commented on a possible transfer of a striker.
Adeyemi has been plagued by muscular problems for a long time, Nmecha twisted his ankle during training. “We’ll have to wait for the diagnosis,” said Terzic, who can fall back on goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and Nico Schlotterbeck. Thomas Meunier, Gio Reyna, Julien Duranville and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens are all out.
Terzic expects a focused performance from his team. “The DFB Cup is the shortest way to a title. We’re very keen to bring the DFB Cup back to Dortmund. We have to be there from the start,” said the BVB coach.
Terzic initially wanted to keep a low profile on the rumors that a new striker was to be signed. Nevertheless, he gave interesting insights into his thoughts on squad planning in attack.
“Of course we are in exchange. We also said that we will keep our eyes and ears open to strengthen the team,” explained Terzic and spoke about the requirements profile of a possible new striker: “If you look at the offensive, you can see there aren’t many players over 1.80 meters tall and then we also know that a Sébastien Haller will travel to the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter, similar to Ramy Bensebaini if the two stay fit. And for those phases and profiles that we’re still missing, we dive in and take a look around.”

That’s it from the press conference.
Terzic about Marco Reus:
“He’s showing a really good side, is very active and wants to win every game in training.”
Terzic about Schott Mainz:
“We prepared diligently for Mainz, but it wasn’t easy to get video material. We’re preparing for a team that seems very hungry. They only had two games in the last season and have interesting players. We’re happy Also to the 11,000 BVB fans who are there. We played against regional league teams in preparation and saw that the players have quality.”
Terzic about painting:
“He’s got incredible one-on-one skills. He’s already shown in pre-season that he’s building on the performances of the second half of the season. It’s important that he stays healthy.”
Terzic about Haller:
“We are sure that he will be a very important factor for us.”
Terzic about Kane:
“Is it a rumor or official? If it’s a rumour, then I will not comment on rumors affecting our club or rumors affecting other clubs. It’s just disrespectful when someone is still under contract is with another club. It’s just not right. If that’s the case, we can still talk about it.”
Terzic about Moukoko:
“The fact that Yousouffa is still a young player, highly talented and dangerous in goals hasn’t changed. That we have big plans with him and want to support him in taking the next step. I think that he has already shown really good approaches in preparation. There are issues that we continue to work on. We want to use his maximum potential. The trust from his side is great and the trust from ours is huge.”
Terzic on the striker rumors
“I don’t want to speak publicly about transfer rumors. Of course we’re in exchange. We also said that we will keep our eyes and ears open to strengthen the team. If you look at the offensive, you can see that it is not there are many players who are over 1.80 meters tall. And then we also know that a Sébastien Haller will travel to the Africa Cup of Nations in winter. Similar to Ramy Bensebaini if the two stay fit. And for these phases and profiles , which we still lack, let’s dive down and take a look around.”
Terzic on the ambitions in the cup
“We know how great a cup final can be in Berlin and lifting the trophy in the air. But that day also means a long way. We said that we always wanted to play for titles in Dortmund. The DFB Cup is the shortest route to a title. That’s why it’s part of it to show good performances right from the start – and we need that on Saturday. A team that lives with great euphoria through promotion. They’ll try to surpass themselves.”
Terzic on the trip to the USA
“We knew that the trip was coming up. It’s clear that in addition to the games and training sessions, there must also be time for it where it’s not about who plays and who doesn’t. And we have a lot of time in the evening and afternoon where the lads were given a lot of time away from football. You got the feeling that the new players were very well received.”
Terzic on the friendlies
“The lads make a very good impression. We had four games in four different cities in nine days. The lads put it through well. We’re on the right track and we want to take the next step on Saturday.”
Terzic about the staff:
“Hello first, I would like to welcome you to the new season. Julien Duranville and Thomas Meunier will definitely be missing. It will also be a few weeks before they can start team training. Gio Reyna and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens are in advanced training. There are question marks behind Karim Adeyemi, who reacted again and again after the missions, and Felix Nmecha. He twisted his ankle in training yesterday and injured his ankle. But it doesn’t look too bad. Gregor Kobel and Nico Schlotterbeck trained the whole week and are available.”
Let’s go! Edin Terzic has taken his seat.
