As of: 09/02/2022 11:51 p.m

Ons Jabeur is in the round of 16 of the US Open for the first time. The 28-year-old Tunisian won a close third-round match on Friday (09/02/22) against local hero Shelby Rogers 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 3.

The number five on the seed list has already achieved her 41st victory on the tour this season, only the world number one Iga Swiatek has even more with 52 successes.

Next success story after Wimbledon?

In the past three years, Jabeur had failed in the third round in New York, now she has bigger plans with her run from Wimbledon. On the “sacred lawn” Jabeur was the first African to reach the final of a Grand Slam.

Murray is still waiting for the first round of 16 since 2017

In the men’s competition, Andy Murray of Scotland was eliminated in the third round. The 35-year-old lost 4-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1) and 3-6 to number 13 seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Since 2017, former world number one Murray, who has been playing with an artificial hip joint since an operation three years ago, has been waiting for a place in the round of 16 at a Grand Slam tournament. Before that, the Scot had managed to do this 38 times in his career.

Gauff easily in the round of 16

Coco Gauff won the American third round duel against Madison Keys in two quick sets 6:2, 6:3 late on Friday evening. It’s the first time the 18-year-old has reached the second week of the tournament at Flushing Meadows. The game was decided quickly: At the beginning both had problems in a match that was manageable overall in terms of level.

Coco Gauff was able to correct her mistakes better than her opponent Madison Keys (unforced errors 14:22) and largely dominated the rallies. With Keys particularly struggling to hold her own service games (only three service games won), there was little hope of a more exciting match.

Krawietz / Mies miss the round of 16 in doubles

Two-time Grand Slam winners Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies missed the round of 16. The 30-year-old from Coburg and his two-year-old partner from Cologne lost in their second-round match in New York to Robin Haase/Philipp Oswald (Netherlands/Austria) 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 3rd place :6.
