Alberts Šmits and Rangers defeat Blues in victory

Eighteen-year-old defenseman Alberts Šmits logged a positive plus-minus rating as the New York Rangers defeated the St. Louis Blues 3–1 on Tuesday to snap a four-game losing skid. Šmits skated 13 minutes and 20 seconds across 17 shifts, a workload that included 18 seconds of shorthanded ice time. He blocked one shot, served two penalty minutes, and finished the night with a +1 rating. The result lifted New York to seven wins in nine home appearances this season, with the team allowing two goals or fewer for the ninth time.

Floridas Panthers defenseman Uvis Balinskis weighed in on the teenager’s adjustment to North American professional hockey. Šmits has featured in all 17 games of his debut campaign, averaging 14 minutes and 29 seconds of ice time while recording eight shots on goal. “He needs to get used to that NHL hockey, to understand what is happening and how,” Balinskis said, pointing to the demanding travel schedule and the challenge of facing a different opponent every night without prior familiarity. While noting that Šmits currently operates in the third defensive pairing with fewer minutes than he handled in Europe, Balinskis expressed confidence that the defenseman’s offensive production will eventually unlock as he matures.

Adam Fox opened the scoring for the hosts in the second period, marking his fourth time this season factoring into the game’s opening goal. Among NHL defensemen, only Quinn Hughes and Jackson LaCombe have achieved that feat more frequently. Olivers Bjorkstrands doubled the New York advantage in the third period before Pius Suter breached Dylan Garand’s crease with 59 seconds remaining in regulation to break the shutout bid. Eeli Tolvanen sealed the outcome by depositing an empty-netter for the Rangers. Garand turned aside 32 shots for the home side, while Joel Hofer stopped 28 pucks for St. Louis.

The New York Rangers return to action to host the Philadelphia Flyers.
