Zhongshan baseball athletes Li Ran and Huang Hanhai win medals

At the 17th Guangdong Provincial Games in July 2026, 18-year-old athletes Li Ran and Huang Hanhai competed on the Zhongshan representative baseball team, which was built primarily using players from Zhongshan Dongsheng Senior High School, securing a gold and a silver medal.

Dual Training and Academic Pressures for 18-Year-Old Athletes

The summer of 2026 brought a demanding schedule for Li and Huang. While many of their peers focused solely on standard academic college entrance examinations, the two baseball players balanced regular studies with preparations for athletic-track admissions tests.

Seven-Year Development Through the Zhongshan Panda Club

Li and Huang began their baseball journey in the third grade after being selected for the Zhongshan Panda Club. Between 2020 and 2026, the local training pipeline provided systematic coaching and extensive match experience. According to Huang, the structured pathway from primary through high school built a strong foundation. The players gained high-level exposure through events ranging from the Panda Cup youth leagues to provincial and national youth baseball championships.

Building Confidence and Resilience on the Diamond

Head coach Fan Xiaodong praised the players’ competitive tenacity during high-pressure games at the provincial tournament. Both athletes noted that traveling across the country for rigorous matches helped eliminate stage fright and fostered a resilient mindset. Li described the sport as teaching him a persistent, “fight to the end” attitude, while Huang credited the team environment with sharpening his maturity and composure under pressure.

Dongsheng Senior High School Anchors Youth Baseball Pipeline

The growth of youth baseball in Zhongshan relies on a deeply rooted talent pipeline anchored by Dongsheng Senior High School, which established its baseball program in 2006 alongside the baseball-themed town of Xiaolan.
