Zheng Xiaoyao Joins Shanghai Xuanniao Basketball Club

Zheng Xiaoyao has officially signed with Shanghai Xuanniao, adding a versatile 3D forward to the roster as the club prepares for the upcoming season. Standing 203 centimeters and weighing 95 kilograms, the forward arrives with a reputation for floor-spacing shooting, multi-position defensive switching, and high-level collegiate experience that includes leading Shanghai Jiao Tong University to the national quarterfinals.

How Zheng Xiaoyao Earned His Professional Opportunity

The journey to the professional ranks began on collegiate and development circuits where Zheng established his two-way identity. As a high school graduate from Fujian Putian No. 1 High School, he enrolled at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and steadily developed into the focal point of the team’s rotation. During the 2021 23rd CUBA league, he averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds in regional play before posting 14 points and 8 rebounds in the national tournament. That standout form earned him an invite to the 2021-2022 CBA All-Star Weekend as a special CUBA player to compete in the Rising Stars challenge and the dunk contest. By 2023, he captained the Shanghai Jiao Tong squad to a top-eight national finish, logging 9.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game across 21.8 minutes.

Those collegiate performances caught national attention in 2022 when he was named to China’s men’s basketball national team B training camp. The selection made him the sole active university player on the roster from the CUBAL circuit, marking the first time a university player without prior professional league experience earned a call-up to the national B team. In 2024, the Shandong Hi-Speed Basketball Club selected Zheng in the second round, 26th overall, in the CBA draft. He spent the following year appearing in warm-up matches for Shandong, including an international friendly against Egypt, before taking over as captain of the Shandong youth team in January 2026 to compete in the CBDL developmental league.

What Shanghai Xuanniao Gains in the Frontcourt Rotation

Scouts and club evaluations highlight Zheng as a modern wing player capable of guarding multiple positions while providing perimeter shooting stability. On offense, his reliable three-point range stretches opposing defenses, complemented by a strong finishing package around the basket. Defensively, his active help-side instincts and lateral quickness allow him to stifle perimeter scorers. The addition gives the Shanghai Xuanniao coaching staff valuable tactical flexibility for their frontcourt pairings as the team integrates him into their tactical system.

What Remains Unresolved Regarding the Rotation and Debut Timeline

Neither Shanghai Xuanniao nor the club management has announced specific lineup configurations, starter designations, or the exact date Zheng will make his official club debut under the new system.
