Zhang Yixin Wins BWF World Junior Championships Women’s Singles Title

Seventeen-year-old Chinese player Zhang Yixin secured the women’s singles title at the 2026 BWF World Junior Championships in Cairo, Egypt, overcoming top-seeded Japanese player Saki Matsumoto 2-1 in the final on October 17.

Path to the Cairo Final

Making her debut at the World Junior Championships, Zhang won seven matches to reach the championship round. Her tournament run included a 15-9, 15-5 victory over Indonesia’s Afatunisa in the round of 16, followed by a 15-10, 15-9 win against Indonesian competitor Ji Xinyu in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Zhang faced a stern test against fifth-seeded Hong Kong player Ye Xinyu, dropping the first game before rallying to win 12-15, 15-10, 15-10.

Championship Match Turning Points

Matsumoto entered the final after eliminating China’s top women’s singles player and reigning Asian junior champion Yin Yiqing in the semifinals. The Japanese top seed maintained that momentum early, taking the opening game 15-9. Zhang adjusted her tactics in the second game to level the match with a 15-10 scoreline. In the deciding third game, the players traded points until a 4-4 tie, after which Zhang secured three consecutive points and pulled away to seal the 15-9 victory.

Zhejiang Tradition and The Final Rally

Born in September 2009 and hailing from Zhejiang province, Zhang follows in the footsteps of Chen Yufei, who is also from Zhejiang and serves as Zhang’s stated role model. During the final, the closing sequence featured a grueling 55-shot rally that pushed both players near their physical limits before Matsumoto conceded the point. With the victory, Zhang adds the world junior singles crown to her earlier mixed team gold medal, finishing the tournament as a double gold medalist as the Chinese team concluded its campaign with two gold, one silver, and three bronze medals.
