Zhang Yixin captures BWF World Junior Championships girls’ singles title

Seventeen-year-old Chinese shuttler Zhang Yixin captured the girls’ singles title at the 2026 BWF World Junior Championships in Cairo, Egypt, overcoming top-seeded Japanese player Saki Matsumoto 2-1 in the final on October 17, 2026. Playing in her debut world junior tournament, Zhang fought back after dropping the opening game to secure a 9-15, 15-10, 15-9 victory.

Championship Journey Through the Cairo Draw

Zhang advanced through seven matches to reach the singles final at the Cairo tournament. Her path included a straight-game win over Indonesia’s Afatunnisa (15-9, 15-5) in the round of 16 and a 15-10, 15-9 defeat of Indonesia’s Ji Xinyu in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Zhang mounted a three-game comeback against fifth seed Ye Xinyou of Hong Kong, winning 12-15, 15-10, 15-10.

Tactical Final Against Top Seed Matsumoto

In the title match, Matsumoto established an early advantage by claiming the first game 15-9. Matsumoto had previously eliminated China’s top-ranked singles player and Asian junior champion Yin Yiqing in the semifinals. Adjusting her tactical approach in the second game, Zhang leveled the match with a 15-10 score. The decisive third game saw tight exchanges up to 4-4 before Zhang broke away with three consecutive points, eventually sealing the match at 15-9.

Following the Footsteps of Chen Yufei

Born in September 2009 in Zhejiang province, Zhang emerged on the national stage earlier in 2026 by helping Zhejiang win the team title and capturing the singles crown at the National Youth Badminton Championships. She subsequently earned a silver medal at the Asian Junior Championships in July after falling to teammate Yin Yiqing in the final. Zhang’s world junior victory comes a decade after fellow Zhejiang native Chen Yufei won the same title. Zhang noted that she frequently watches Chen’s matches to study her multi-shot rallies and resilient competitive spirit.

Medal Haul for the Chinese Junior Team

With her victories in both the earlier mixed team event and the individual competition, Zhang finished the championships as a double gold medalist. The Chinese junior national team concluded its campaign in Cairo with a total of two gold, one silver, and three bronze medals.

Upcoming International Assignments

The Chinese Badminton Association has not announced upcoming international assignments for Zhang and her fellow junior medalists.
