Zengcheng District Concludes Mayor’s Cup Badminton Preliminaries

The 2026 Guangzhou Mayor’s Cup Badminton Series mixed team tournament for the Zengcheng division concluded on October 11 at the Zengcheng Mingde Badminton Hall, establishing a direct pathway for local amateurs to advance to municipal-level competition. A total of 50 teams and 333 players competed across four age-group categories during the two-day event, which ran alongside regional development initiatives.

Zengcheng Division Tournament Structure and Municipal Qualification

Organized by the Guangzhou Sports Bureau and the Guangzhou Sports Federation, the Zengcheng preliminary tournament was hosted by the Zengcheng District Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau and co-organized by Guangdong Zengwen Keji Culture and Sports Development Corp. The event received support from the Guangzhou Badminton Management Center and the Guangzhou Badminton Association. The tournament featured mixed team competition divided into youth, middle-youth, middle-aged, and senior age brackets, incorporating mixed doubles, men’s doubles, and men’s singles matches. The top three finishing teams in each division secured qualification for the municipal-level finals, continuing a tiered competition structure designed to connect grassroots play with city-wide tournaments.

Grassroots Sports Development and Regional Integration

The competition served as part of regional development efforts supporting the construction of the Nankunshan-Luofushan county, town, and village high-quality development pilot zone. Zengcheng district officials noted that the tournament builds on local public sports infrastructure and community sports participation. Previously, the district earned the “Outstanding Competition Zone” designation during the 18th Mayor’s Cup series, reflecting established organizing frameworks across local sports venues.

Economic Impact and Tourism Integration

Local organizers integrated the sports schedule with regional commerce, leveraging the tournament to drive foot traffic toward local dining, lodging, and leisure attractions. The event aligned with ongoing campaigns to combine athletic competitions with tourism promotion, encouraging participants and spectators from across the Greater Bay Area to visit Zengcheng. The district continues to promote sports-driven tourism models as part of efforts to stimulate local retail and service sector activity.

Future Sports Infrastructure Expansion

Building on the grassroots participation in badminton, Zengcheng plans to expand its calendar of community events, including upcoming marathons, cycling races, and football tournaments. Municipal authorities aim to advance the development of sports-themed towns and host additional high-level competitions to broaden public fitness options and support regional industrial upgrading linked to outdoor recreation and tourism.
