The Women’s Tennis Association announced that all joint men’s and women’s WTA 1000 tournaments will offer equal prize money starting in 2027, ensuring professional tennis players are paid equally. Tournaments in Rome, Canada, and Cincinnati will join events in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, and Beijing to close remaining compensation gaps, aligning with the four Grand Slam tournaments.
Equal Pay Timeline for Rome, Canada, and Cincinnati
The upcoming 2027 adjustments will eliminate prize disparities at remaining joint tour stops. For instance, the Rome tournament previously promised pay parity by 2025, but current figures still reflect gaps; the men’s total prize pool reached $9.6 million while the women’s total was $8.3 million at the event.
Historical disparities stretch back decades. In 1970, women’s tennis pioneer Billie Jean King received $600 for winning the Rome tournament, whereas men’s champion Ilie Năstase collected $3,500. King frequently cited that income gap as her primary motivation for establishing a separate women’s professional tour.
Manila Hosts New WTA 250 Tournament
Alongside the prize money updates, the WTA confirmed that Manila, Philippines, will host a new WTA 250 tournament next year. The addition responds directly to surging local interest sparked by the rise of 18th-ranked Filipino player Alexandra Eala on the international circuit.
To ease scheduling demands, the governing body also adjusted mandatory tournament requirements. Players ranked in the top 50 will see their required WTA 500 appearances drop from six to four per year. Under the new framework, baseline obligations will require 14 WTA tour events alongside four Grand Slam appearances.
Player Committee Leadership and Trial Implementation
Tournaments Council President and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula helped shape the structural changes. Pegula noted that the flexible scheduling framework allows athletes to tailor their calendars around individual health and competitive targets.
WTA officials confirmed that the 2027 schedule and prize money updates will operate as a one-year trial. The organization will evaluate the economic and competitive impact throughout the season before setting permanent policies for 2028 and beyond.
