Walking Football for Seniors Starts at Sport Arena Wien

Walking football has arrived at the Sport Arena Wien in the Leopoldstadt district, offering seniors a way to stay active on the pitch without the physical strain of traditional matches. The weekly sessions, launched on Oct. 5 in a collaboration between the Pensionist*innenklubs and the Walking Football Austria Academy, take place every Monday from 10 to 12 in the Sport Arena Wien.

The sport, which has grown into a worldwide movement since its founding in Chesterfield, England, in 2011, is designed specifically for older adults. Rules dictate that participants must walk rather than run, while body contact and hard challenges are strictly prohibited to prevent injuries and accommodate varying fitness levels.

Weekly Training Sessions and Social Gathering in Leopoldstadt

Sessions run at the Sport Arena Wien located at Stephanie-Endres-Straße 3, with no prior experience or registration required for participants. Madlena Komitova, head of department for Vienna’s senior clubs, emphasized the community aspect of the initiative. “Even in old age, staying on the ball means being active, trying new things, and preserving the joy of community,” Komitova told Wiener Bezirksblatt.

The weekly gathering extends beyond the pitch itself. Following the morning sessions, participants can purchase a low-cost lunch snack provided by d’Kuchl to eat together. “During the shared meal, there is time to chat, laugh, and be together,” Komitova said of the post-training routine.

Global Growth and Austrian Expansion Efforts

While the Leopoldstadt sessions offer a local entry point, the sport itself spans roughly 80 countries globally. In Germany, 16 professional clubs from the first and second Bundesliga—including Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04, Hamburger SV, and FC Bayern Munich—have established dedicated walking football sections, according to reporting by Kurier. The German Football Association (DFB) has also engaged in discussions with health insurance providers regarding the inclusion of the sport in preventive health programs.

In Austria, establishment has faced a slower rollout since the country’s movement gained traction following initial media coverage in April 2023. The Walking Football Austria Academy has worked alongside sports associations and health institutions to expand availability, supported by sports science data indicating that regular players experience measurable health improvements, including weight loss, delayed muscle degradation, and improved stability and sleep.

Expanded Fitness Offerings at Sport Arena Wien

In addition to the Monday walking football sessions, Vienna’s senior clubs coordinate several other physical activity programs at the Sport Arena Wien throughout the week. The schedule includes dance gymnastics with Emilia Sipöcz on Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m., health gymnastics with Friedrich Graussam on Tuesdays from 10 to 11 a.m., Chinese dance and Tai Chi with Yongli Liu on Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m., dance with Bianca on Wednesdays from 12 to 1:30 p.m., and yoga with Hannah Molcar on Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m.
